Pristina, February 2, 2017 – Kosovo Law Institute (KLI) Executive Director Betim Musliu and Senior Legal Expert Ehat Miftaraj presented a lecture sharing KLI’s broad justice sector monitoring and reform advocacy experience with the D4J Live Criminal Law Clinic. In addition to KLI’s recent anti-corruption monitoring work, KLI informed students about its most recent D4J monitoring initiative to document whether criminal courts are effectively protecting the rights of poor defendants legal representation in criminal cases, and whether administrative courts delivering effective legal remedies in administrative disputes.
KLI and the students openly discussed challenges facing the Kosovo justice system. and students expressed great interest in KLI’s monitoring methods, and the apparent failure of justice authorities to inform poor defendants about their potential right to free legal representation counsel. Finally, Mr. Musliu and Mr. Miftaraj commended the students for their engagement with D4J pro bono, Live Criminal Law Clinic and invited the students to cooperate with KLI in their monitoring project.
The D4J Live Criminal Law Clinic offers students of the Faculty of Law the opportunity to assist KBA advocates in their pro bono representation of poor criminal defendants. The Clinic serves 14 students, each of whom will have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in practice by working on live legal cases under the mentorship of a KBA advocate during their fourth year of law school or Master’s program
