High School Students in Skenderaj Learn about Kosovo Justice System

Skenderaj, June 8, 2017 – CBM organized another lecture where 26 students from Gymnasium Hamzë Jashari in Skenderaj participated. Mr. Ubejd Gashi presented to the students the legal framework of Kosovo, legal rights and access to justice. Mr. Gashi delivered the lecture to students between 16-18 years of age at the school where students also received distributed promotional material pens, notebooks, and fact sheets containing information about the work of the Basic Court of Mitrovica.

After the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask different questions regarding how the court functions in Skenderaj and how they should address different issues if they are faced with a case. During this presentation, students learned about the Demand for Justice Program (D4J) goal of fostering judicial transparency and were invited to take advantage of their right as citizens through future D4J-led activities including the monitoring of cases open to the public with KLI, and to the request for the publication of court decisions using Kosovo’s Freedom of Information Act.

This activity’s goal was to increase the level of knowledge of justice sector mechanisms among high school and university students by organizing lectures that will empower participants understanding of the legal system. The students participating did not seem to have knowledge of the judicial system in Kosovo and the conditions in which they are currently operating. On the other hand, students were very pleased to understand that they can also participate in other D4J events designed to encourage transparent and accountable judicial institutions in Kosovo.
